Rope halters are a part of history, first being used by horsemen years ago, when horse-tying "how-to" was spread simply by word of mouth. The fiador knot, used at the bottom of the rope halter, began with horsemen in Argentina.
I began using rope halters after my mother introduced me to Natural Horsemanship. I found that the rope halter offered a better, more natural form of communication between me and my horse. I even threw the bit away and began riding with just a rope halter and lead line!
I, however, went through many rope halters that didn't fit properly - some were too big, with the fiador knot hanging too low under my horse's jaw. Others were too small, with the cheek pieces laying too tight against my horse's delicate facial nerves. When my trainer finally asked me to get a new rope halter for my horse, I decided to tie my own to ensure a proper fit! Ever since then, I've been tying custom made rope halters - and not just for my horse! I make all kinds of rope halters, in all kinds of sizes and colors - for all kinds of horses! And I call them - Hippie Halters...
In order to make your horse a Hippie Halter, I need 3 simple measurements:
1. First, I need the measurement across the front of your horse's face. You need to measure from the knobby point at the lower end of one facial crest across to the knobby point at the lower end of the other facial crest.
2. Second, I need the circumference of your horse's nose. This measurement is taken directly below the end of the facial crests.
3. Lastly, I need the length of your horse's cheek. Measure from the lower point of one facial crest to the groove at the top of the jawbone.
With these three measurements, I will do the necessary calculations in order to make you a custom fit rope halter. You do the measurements - I do the math!
